Understanding Masonry

Brick Pointing vs Repointing vs Tuck Pointing — What's the Difference?

The terms get used interchangeably. Here's what they actually mean and which one you need.

Pointing is the original mortar joint finishing applied to a new brick wall. Pointing happens once, when the wall is first built.

Repointing is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from existing joints and installing fresh mortar. This is what 95% of NYC building owners actually need. Mortar typically needs replacing every 30–50 years; brick lasts 100+ years. When mortar fails, water enters; when water enters, brick spalls and structural problems begin. Repointing protects everything else.

Tuck pointing is a decorative technique using two mortar colors to create a fine, raised line down the center of each joint, simulating expensive tightly-cut brickwork on more economical brick. True tuck pointing is rare in modern work — when contractors say "tuck pointing" they usually mean color-matched repointing, which is fine but not the same craft.

What you actually need to ask: "What type of mortar will you use, and does it match my building's age and condition?" The answer should be specific (Type N, Type O, or historic lime mortar) and tied to your building's era. Modern Portland cement mortar on a pre-1920 building is a common contractor mistake that causes accelerated brick damage.

Common Questions

NYC Masonry FAQs

How much does masonry repair cost in NYC?
Masonry repair in NYC ranges from $500 for small spot repointing jobs to $50,000+ for full building facade work. Most chimney repairs run $1,500–$5,000. Section repointing runs $15–$30 per square foot. Full facade repointing runs $25–$50 per square foot. We provide free written estimates after on-site inspection.
What is the difference between brick pointing, repointing, and tuck pointing?
Pointing is the original mortar joint finishing on a new wall. Repointing replaces deteriorated mortar joints in existing walls — what most NYC owners actually need. Tuck pointing is a decorative two-color technique creating the appearance of fine joints, often confused with repointing in casual usage. We do all three.
How often does a brick wall need repointing?
NYC brick walls typically need full repointing every 30–50 years, depending on exposure, original mortar quality, and weathering. Spot repointing of localized failure may be needed every 10–20 years. Chimneys often need repointing more frequently because of weather exposure. We assess condition free during our on-site visit and only recommend work that's actually needed.
Do you do chimney repair?
Yes. We handle chimney repointing, brick replacement, crown repair, cap installation, flue tile work, and full chimney rebuilds across NYC. Chimneys are exposed to extreme weather and are usually the first masonry feature to fail on a building.
Can you match historic mortar?
Yes. For pre-1920 buildings, brownstones, and landmarked properties we use historic lime mortars or Type O mixes that match the original. Using modern Portland cement mortar on a historic brick building is a common contractor mistake that traps moisture and accelerates brick damage. Our mortar specifications are written into every quote.
How long does masonry repair take?
Spot repairs: half day to 2 days. Mid-size section repointing: 1–3 weeks. Full chimney rebuild: 3–7 days. Full facade repointing: 3–8 weeks depending on building size and access. Weather and permit timing can shift schedules; we provide a realistic written timeline with every quote.
Will my masonry work require scaffolding?
Anything above ground floor reach typically requires scaffolding, lifts, or swing-stage. We include all access equipment in our written quote so there are no surprises. For tall buildings or facade work above 6 stories we typically use pipe scaffolding; for shorter jobs lifts are faster and cheaper.
Do you offer warranties on masonry work?
Yes. Every masonry project includes a written workmanship warranty, typically 1–5 years depending on scope, plus full manufacturer warranties on materials. We stand behind every job. If something isn't right, we come back and make it right.
